Meet DIR EN GREY. Since 1997, the Osaka quartet’s songs of pain, human suffering, anger, frustration and alienation have seen them identify with the youth of Japan and become the forerunners of the Japanese rock scene. Within seven months of forming the band had a top ten single, within a year had sold out a 12,000 capacity venue, and by 1999 had three singles simulteanously in the top 10 – and it’s only gotten better for them since. But like any ambitious band, they are not content with just being big in their home country.

After some hugely successful shows in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea, in 2005 DIR EN GREY became one of the first Asian bands that dared to tackle the tough European market. The result? Their first show at the 3600 capacity Columbiahalle Berlin was completely sold out within 72 hours, with no promotion, posters, media support or marketing campaigns. DIR EN GREY sold 3600 tickets with only their extremely diversified music and word of mouth (and web) recommendation by extremely loyal fans. They have since made waves across the rest of Europe, seeing the mania spread as far as the Nordic countries, and even made a dent on the tough US market.

Their rapid ascent and commercial success is not the only incredible thing about this band. DIR EN GREYs flexibility and musical development ensures that every album sounds unique, not just compared to their previous efforts, but compared to anything else out there. Goths, Metalheads, Rockers, Punks and even teeny boppers have all found themselves amongst DIR EN GREYs loyal and growing fanbase in Japan, USA, Canada and mainland Europe.

DIR EN GREY made their first mark on the UK with the release of “The Marrow Of A Bone” on May 7th 2007, through Gan-Shin Records. After selling out two shows at London’s Islington Academy at a £28 ticket price with no adverts or other promotion, the previously cynical UK media jumped all over the band, with features in all the major UK rock press, and heavy rotation of the videos on the UK music channels. The UK had finally welcomed DIR EN GREY.

Fast forward to October 2008. The new album “Uroboros” is recorded and ready to go – the band’s first release to be simultaneously released worldwide, a testament to the growth of their international fanbase and their own determination to not just be big in Japan. The seventh album of the J-Rock superstars is a virtual steel thunderstorm which brings the band back to their roots. The album reflects the past, present and future of DIR EN GREY. Sorrow, anger, pain and alienation are still the main topic of the bands lyrics, experimental sound structures, hard riffs, dark, melancholic parts the basic elements of DIR EN GREY`s music. The wide, incredible vocal range of DIR EN GREY`s frontman KYO goes from wonderful melodic vocal parts to truly strange, unheard of sounding parts bordering on the insane. With no doubt DIR EN GREY are unique enough to vividly stand out on the International Rock Scene and become as big as they have threatened to be since the rock world outside of Japan started to take notice.

“Uroboros” was released worldwide on the 12th of November by Gan-Shin records. There was a limited edition with three bonus tracks, featuring Japanese versions of “Dozing Green”, “Glass Skin” and the unplugged version of “Agitated Screams Of Maggots”.

“A KNOT OF”, the next DIR EN GREY DVD, which was also released by Gan Shin Records on the 6th of February takes you on a grevious journey with the band through three of the most tasking years with the 5 individuals who make the band. Now, excerpts from the Fanclub only DVDs are made available for you compressed in one DVD. It’s time for you to experience the hardship and the situations that surrounded them, for real.”

The new DVD “TOUR08 THE ROSE TRIMS AGAIN” will be released in Europe by Okami Records on the 1th of May 2009. On December 2008 DIR EN GREY travelled through the USA and Canada to start their second North American Headliner Tour that included 21 shows. Following to their North American Headliner Tour they travelled through Japan playing the major halls using the same motto.
